I can almost hear you saying, “Oh no!!!”
I think one of the biggest worries for all
parents when they have a baby is their little one running a fever… And
honestly, it’s understandable. Seeing that tiny body’s temperature rise can
make any parent anxious. But to prevent these worries from taking over, it’s
important to be informed. Instead of panicking and letting go of the steering
wheel, we should hold on tightly and act in the best way possible.
First, Stay Calm
The first thing to do when your baby has a fever is not to panic. Measure their
temperature correctly with a thermometer. A temperature above 38°C (100.4°F) is
considered a fever.
What Can We Do at Home?
- Dress lightly: Avoid thick clothes; choose thin, comfortable outfits.
- Keep them hydrated: Breastfeed more often or give formula; fever can
dehydrate the body.
- Keep the room cool: 21–23°C (70–73°F) is ideal.
- Wipe with a warm cloth: Use lukewarm water, not cold, and gently wipe.
- Be careful with medication: Do not give fever reducers on your own unless
recommended by a doctor.
When Should You See a Doctor Immediately?
- If your baby is under 3 months old and has a fever over 38°C (100.4°F)
- If the fever comes with shortness of breath, bluish skin, seizures, rashes,
or refusal to feed
- If the fever lasts more than 3 days
Remember!
A fever is usually not a sign of something serious; it’s often a sign that the
immune system is working. However, your baby’s overall condition, fussiness,
and age are very important. If something doesn’t feel right, don’t hesitate to
contact your doctor. After all, nothing is more valuable than your baby’s
health ❤️
